Sunday 6th Dec

INTRODUCTION

We’ve an extravagance of candles today! We light the second candle of our Advent wreath – for those of you at home we’ll be streaming live as I light the candle in church. Join in the words as I say them. It will be a way of connecting our two congregations.

Our Wednesday Worship also starts up again on 9 December and the children and their families will be lighting their own Christingles.

Our Advent devotions take four themes out of the Bible passages set. The four Sundays of Advent build up to the final, best theme of love for Christmas Day. Today we light the second candle, and the theme is HOPE. Here is the reflection from our Advent Devotions.

When things are bad hope is what keeps us going: hope that the bad times will soon be over; hope that better things are to come; hope that our perseverance will be its own reward. Emily Dickinson wrote that ‘Hope is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul’, that sings through the stormiest times.

Our ancestors in faith hoped for a time when God’s rule of love would cover the earth. We believe that time began with the birth of Christ.

Today we light the first and second candles of the Advent wreath. The first candle is FAITH, the second candle is HOPE
